Adding and removing sales tax

U.S. sales tax is quoted as a percentage of the pre-tax price and added at the register, so adding it is a single multiplication. The reverse is where people slip: the tax inside a total is not the rate times the total, because the total is already larger than the base the rate applies to. Dividing by (1 + rate) recovers the original price exactly.

The formulas

Add: tax = price × rate, total = price × (1 + rate) Remove: price = total / (1 + rate), tax = total − price rate as a decimal: 7.25% = 0.0725

Worked examples

A $249.99 item at 7.25%: tax = 249.99 × 0.0725 = 18.124…, rounded to $18.12; total $268.11.

A receipt total of $107.25 at 7.25%: price = 107.25 / 1.0725 = $100.00, so the tax was $7.25.

Limitations

  • CalcNest does not look up rates by address; rates are set locally and change often.
  • Some items carry extra excise taxes (fuel, alcohol, tobacco, lodging) that are not sales tax.
  • Use tax on online or out-of-state purchases works the same way mathematically but is reported differently.

Frequently asked questions

What sales tax rate should I enter?

Use the combined rate where the sale happens: the state rate plus any county, city and special-district rates. Your receipt usually shows it, and your state department of revenue publishes a rate lookup by address. CalcNest does not guess your rate because local rates change several times a year.

How do I take sales tax out of a total?

Choose "Total includes tax". The pre-tax price is the total divided by (1 + rate). Do not just subtract the rate as a percentage of the total — on $107.25 at 7.25%, 7.25% of the total is $7.78, but the actual tax is $7.25.

Is sales tax charged on everything?

No. Many states exempt or reduce tax on groceries, prescription drugs or clothing, and five states have no statewide sales tax. Services are taxed in some states and not others. Enter 0% for exempt items.

How is sales tax rounded?

Retailers generally compute tax on the invoice total and round to the nearest cent, but the exact rule (per item or per invoice, round half up) is set by each state. This calculator rounds the final tax to the cent.
