Weighted grades and the final exam
Most syllabi give each category — homework, quizzes, labs, exams — a percentage of the final grade. A weighted average respects those shares: a 70 on a final worth 35% hurts far more than a 70 on one quiz. Before the term ends, the average over the categories you have so far shows where you stand, and the final-exam formula shows what it takes to move up a letter.
The formulas
Weighted grade = Σ (score × weight) / Σ weight (categories with a score) Final needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) / w (w = final weight ÷ 100) Grade if final = x: current × (1 − w) + x × w
Worked example
Homework 90% (weight 20), quizzes 85% (20), midterm 78% (25): (90×20 + 85×20 + 78×25) / 65 = 5,450 / 65 = 83.85%, a B.
Currently 85%, final worth 25%, target 90%: (90 − 85 × 0.75) / 0.25 = (90 − 63.75) / 0.25 = 105% — not reachable without extra credit. A target of 80% needs (80 − 63.75) / 0.25 = 65%.
Notes
- Weights do not have to add to 100% — the grade so far uses only the weights that have scores.
- Scores over 100% (extra credit) are allowed. Letter grades follow the common U.S. 10-point scale with plus and minus.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a weighted grade?
Multiply each category's score by its weight, add the results, and divide by the total weight you have scores for. Homework 90% (20%), quizzes 85% (20%) and a midterm 78% (25%) give (18 + 17 + 19.5) / 65 = 83.8% so far. Once every category has a score and the weights add to 100%, that is your final grade.
What do I need on my final exam?
Use: needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) / w, where w is the final's weight as a decimal. With 83.8% now, a final worth 35% and a target of 90%: (90 − 83.8 × 0.65) / 0.35 = 101.5%. A result over 100% means the target is out of reach without extra credit; a negative result means you have already secured it.
What if my class uses points instead of percentages?
If the syllabus lists points (for example 200 points of homework out of 1,000), the weight is the share of total points: 200 / 1,000 = 20%. Enter each category's percentage score and that weight. For a single points total, just divide points earned by points possible.
Which letter grade scale does this use?
The common U.S. scale: 90–100 A, 80–89 B, 70–79 C, 60–69 D, below 60 F, with a minus at 0–2 and a plus at 7–9 within each band (93+ A, 90–92 A−, 87–89 B+). Many schools differ slightly — your syllabus wins.
